Unrelated trial delayed for man accused of beating elderly woman

Busy court delays trial

The man accused of seriously assaulting an elderly woman and leaving her for dead on a West Kelowna forestry road last spring had his trial on unrelated charges postponed due to lack of available court time Thursday.

Kevin Lee Barrett was arrested and charged with attempted murder last April after a 79-year-old woman was found badly beaten on the Bear Lake Main Forest Service Road on the evening of April 29.

“Our preliminary investigation has revealed that the elderly woman was the victim of an alleged assault, carried out by an individual who was well known to her,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said at the time.

Police said the assault of Ellie Holmes began at the Westview Village mobile home complex where she lived, before she was driven in her own vehicle and left on the forestry road.

Barrett has remained in custody since his arrest, after he was denied bail last August.

On Thursday, Barrett was scheduled to face trial on charges of mischief, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breaching probation conditions, but the trial was adjourned for four months. While the Crown and defence were ready to proceed with the trial, a lack of court availability forced the trial to be delayed to June.

The circumstances around the three charges are unknown at this time.

Meanwhile, Barrett's attempted murder case will be back in court on Feb. 24, when a Supreme Court trial date is expected to be scheduled.

Following the alleged assault, a GoFundMe page raised almost $7,000 for "Amazing Ellie."

Prior to his arrest last spring, Barrett had been charged with causing a disturbance and uttering threats to cause bodily harm. In May, following his arrest for the alleged attempted murder, he was convicted of causing a disturbance and sentenced to 30 days jail, with one year of probation.

His record dates back to a 2008 assault causing bodily harm, which he served 10 month jail for.
