Hudson Road Elementary put in hold and secure mode Monday

Hold and secure at school

Students and staff at Hudson Road Elementary in West Kelowna were placed under a "hold and secure" Monday afternoon.

The safety measure was requested by RCMP as a precaution due to a report of an unstable individual in the area. It was lifted about 15 minutes later, when RCMP deemed the area was safe.

Parents received an email from the school about 1:30 p.m. informing them of the situation.

It is unclear what time the school was asked to go into hold and secure mode.

Parent Jaclyn Cornish says it was "pretty terrifying" to hear the news.

"You almost want to cry because you just want to go in there and get your kids out of there and get them safe. You wonder is it someone with a bomb, is it someone with a gun, like what's going on? They give you no details. It's scary.

"I don't think there's really much more (the school) can do than send out an email ... but so many things go through your mind, like what kind of person is this, and why isn't there more information?"
