West Kelowna is selling the naming rights to its new sports dome

$15K to name a dome

If you have $75,000, your name could be emblazoned across West Kelowna's new multi-sports facility.

City council Tuesday gave staff the approval to look for a company, individual or family willing to pay for naming rights to the dome.

Recreation and Culture manager Bob Kusch says the starting price is $15,000 each year over the life of a five-year contract. Any agreement could include a five-year renewal.

"We hope," Kusch said when asked by Coun. Jayson Zilkie if it's possible there could be a bidding war.

"We've established a minimum rate...more than one could come in. Bidding wars have happened in other communities."

Coun. Doug Findlater was more cautious. Findlater said Royal LePage was the only company involved when the arena was named nearly 15 years ago, and they had no luck trying to get companies to step up for the skate park or amphitheatre.

Similar to a standard RFP for other municipal jobs, Kusch says the bid process will go through the Civic Info website.

However, he did indicate the city would first establish a bid criteria, then work with communications to get the message out broadly.

"A lot of people that might bid on this will not be looking at Civic Info," he said.

"Advertising in our local newspapers, sometimes it's seen, sometimes it's not."

If this past weekend is any indication, any advertising on the building would get the attention of a lot of eyeballs.

Kusch told council Westside Youth Soccer started this weekend.

By 9 a.m., he said there were 109 people in the building, and by 10 a.m., there were 180.
