West Kelowna council gives unanimous support to new brewery

Ready for Westside ale trail

A lack of parking at a proposed 150-seat brewery in the newly redeveloped Lakeview Village didn't deter West Kelowna council from approving the project.

Council unanimously gave a thumbs up to the development permit application, despite a 33 parking stall shortfall.

It was the developer's contention that with a number of office tenants in the mall, and the brewery mainly busy evenings and weekends, that parking wouldn't be an issue.

Neighbours around the Anders Road mall and the Lakeview Heights Community Association also agreed with the variance request concerning parking.

"I do not anticipate a huge (parking) problem," association president Wendy Jobs told council. "I think the tenants and the mall owners will be highly motivated to ensure parking is not an issue."

Mayor Gord Milsom said, with the staggered hours of businesses, he likes the idea of shared parking. He added the brewery would be a "wonderful" addition.

"People come from all over Canada to visit our wine trail," said the mayor. "Maybe everyone doesn't drink wine. Maybe they wound want to have a glass of beer as well."

Developer Rob Chetner went a step further.

"By introducing a brewery here, it could be a precursor to what could become a West Kelowna Ale Trail in the future."

Chetner says he believes the mall and the neighbourhood are lacking community gathering spots, such as a coffee shop or pub, and believes this addition will provide that.

"I'm excited to see this brewery come to town," said Coun. Stephen Johnston. "Lakeview Village Mall is a great example of what I would like to see happen more in our community. These hubs create a unique community place in each neighbourhood."
