BC Housing applies for temporary shelter in West Kelowna

New shelter for Westside

A new temporary winter shelter could provide 40 homeless people a safe and warm place to stay through the winter in West Kelowna.

The shelter would be operated by the West Kelowna Shelter Society at 1160 Stevens Rd., where at least two staff members would work around the clock.

WKSS has also managed a shelter at 3672 Brown Rd. since December 2018.

BC Housing will submit a temporary use permit to the City of West Kelowna on Dec. 10. If the application is approved, the shelter should open in early January and run until the end of March.

The site would use modular trailers, giving space for bunks, showers, toilets and other amenities. Interior Health would also provide health services.

Shelter residents would be prioritized according to the 2018 Point in Time Homeless Count, which found 72 individuals identified as homeless in West Kelowna.

WKSS says neighbour concerns would be a top priority, and it is committed to providing communication with area residents.

To ensure safety, fencing, security cameras and outdoor lights will also be implemented.
