A Central Okanagan driver has come forward to say he's the one behind photos showing a souped-up Cadillac doing more than 300 km/h.
But Kyle Gonek says he has an explanation.
Images from Gonek's social media sent to Castanet appear to show his vehicle going at insane speeds, and he even brags about it on his Instagram profile.
However, Gonek says the photos are misleading.
"It's funny how you guys say I was using my phone and driving fast and photographing, but my girlfriend was the one who took both pictures," Gonek tells Castanet.
"My car, physically, wasn't moving faster than 30 km/h."
Gonek says the photos were snapped as he did a brakestand at the Ashcroft dragstrip, which is why the speedometer registered such a high speed.
He also admits to doing a burnout in his West Kelowna driveway, and says his girlfriend was in the back seat, taking the photos.
He says he's previously recorded speeds as high as 437 km/h while spinning out while stuck on ice, which would be impossible while in motion on the street.
Gonek also admits having been in trouble with police before.
He claims police dogs damaged his $120,000 car while searching the vehicle and says ICBC has demanded he surrender his driver's licence for six months.
"So, yeah, I'm sour towards the police force ... I think the speed limits are a joke," he said in an email to Castanet.
Indeed, court records show Gonek has numerous speeding and excessive speeding charges piled up over the last several years across B.C. as well as traffic charges for driving without due care and attention, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident. Gonek says the leaving the scene charge was actually a friend's, who was driving a vehicle licensed under his name, and has been dealt with by police.
"Don't get me wrong, I do speed ... but nothing even close to (what was depicted in the previous photos) on local roads – not to mention there isn't enough road anywhere straight enough to get my car up to those speeds."
Gonek says he's received a lot of harassment over the photos and wanted to set the matter straight.
