Flees cops, injured in crash

A police officer's actions are being investigated following a serious, four-vehicle crash in West Kelowna Monday evening.

The crash occurred just after 6 p.m., when a Kelowna RCMP officer saw a prohibited driver crossing the Bennett Bridge towards West Kelowna.

The officer followed and attempted to pull the car over, but the driver continued west on Highway 97.

Shortly after, the fleeing driver collided with three other vehicles near Boucherie Road. The suspected prohibited driver was trapped in his car following the crash, and was taken to Kelowna General Hospital with serious injuries once emergency crews freed him. Those in the other three vehicles were not seriously injured.

The highway was closed until the early morning hours as police investigated. The Independent Investigation Office of BC is also investigating the crash to determine whether police acted appropriately.

The IIO investigates any police-involved incident that results in serious injury or death.

Just last week, a Kelowna RCMP officer was cleared of any wrongdoing by the IIO after a cyclist pedalled in front of the off-duty officer's car near Orchard Park Mall.
