Peachland's 'golden' van

The District of Peachland has thieves to thank for moving one step closer to purchasing a new community policing van.

The municipality has earmarked nearly $5,500 in ill-gotten booty toward the vehicle.

Last year, police in Peachland seized several items in what appeared to be a storage area for stolen goods.

The items recovered included several unique items along with jewelry, cash and three gold bars.

Peachland CAO Elsie Lemke says police and the municipality did their due diligence and tried to match the recovered items with their rightful owners.

"We did find a few owners of very unique things like an underwater camera worth a fortune," she said.

Lemke says those items not claimed were turned over to the municipality.

Some of the jewelry was given to the Boys and Girls Club to benefit some of their fundraising efforts, while the rest remained with the municipality.

"The community policing vehicle needs replacing in the next year or two. We had set up a fund in the last budget to put away $5,000 a year. This seemed like a good project to donate the funds toward," said Lemke.

The municipality now has more than $10,000 of the expected $30,000 cost of the vehicle put aside.

This is the second time the municipality has received a large amount of cash from the proceeds of crime.

Three years ago, $4,294 was donated to the Peachland Wellness Centre towards its outreach program.
