Gov't appeals pot store vote

The BC Liquor Distribution Branch wants West Kelowna to take a second look at its application for a government-operated cannabis retail store.

The original application came before council July 23, however, the motion to approve the application was defeated when a vote ended tied 3-3. A tie vote means a motion is automatically defeated.

Councillors Carol Zanon, Doug Findlater and Jason Friesen all voted against the motion. Mayor Gord Milsom and councillors Stephen Johnston and Jayson Zilkie voted in favour.

Coun. Rick deJong was absent.

The mayor has the ability, under provisions provided through the Community Charter, to bring back any item for council's reconsideration within 30 days.

Milsom is exercising that provision, meaning council will take a second look Tuesday.

If approved, it would be the sixth cannabis retail store given approval in the city, two more than the previous council agreed to.

However, the newly elected council approved a fifth location earlier this year for the Boucherie area.

The government cannabis store would be located within the Westbank Town Centre Mall on Dobbin Road.
