A former West Kelowna high school teacher is back behind bars after allegedly breaching 11 of his bail conditions while awaiting sentencing on a sexual interference conviction.
Bradley Furman was arrested Tuesday night after the Crown laid charges of attempting to obstruct or pervert justice along with 11 additional breach of bail conditions. The new charges come after the 30-year-old pleaded guilty in March to sexual exploitation of a young person, attempting to pervert justice and three counts of breaching bail conditions.
The new charges allege Furman told a complainant in his case to destroy evidence last month, and that he has been contacting a complainant on multiple occasions over the past year, while also possessing a device capable of accessing the internet, against his bail conditions.
Furman was originally charged with sexual assault, two counts of sexual exploitation of a young person, luring a child and attempting to pervert justice, stemming from incidents last summer. As part of a plea deal, the Crown had agreed to drop several of the charges in exchange for his guilty pleas on the sexual exploitation, attempting to pervert justice and three breach charges.
Sexual exploitation, defined as sexual contact with a young person when the older person is in a position of trust, carries a minimum sentence of one year.
Prior to his arrest Tuesday, Furman had been under 24-hour house arrest since October.
The details of the allegations against Furman have yet to come out in court, but they're expected to be heard during his sentencing hearing, scheduled to begin Sept. 23.
The case will be back in court next week, when the Crown plans to apply to have Furman's bail revoked. He'll remain in custody until then. The Crown will also apply to have Furman's $10,000 surety forfeited.
Furman was a teacher at Mount Boucherie Secondary until May 2018.
