Water restrictions coming

The City of West Kelowna expects to ramp up water restrictions over the next few days.

Lower than normal storage in the city's water reservoir is to blame.

City officials say they are monitoring the situation, but indicate Stage 2 sprinkling regulations are likely to be implemented in the "coming days" to ensure water levels do not drop significantly.

Stage 2 restrictions allow even numbered addresses to water only on Tuesday and Saturday, while odd numbered addresses are able to water only on Wednesday and Sunday..

Stage 1 restrictions, which are in effect year round, allow even addresses to water on even numbered days and odd addresses on odd numbered days.

Officials, working with consultants, presented council with a drought response decision tree which will determine when regulations should be elevated.

Less than normal precipitation in March and May meant the snowpack that feeds the city's water supplies disappeared earlier than normal, resulting in a lower reservoir storage.

The city has already begun asking residents to consider conserving water ahead of restrictions.
