Resident heroes douse fire

Quick work by Glenrosa residents stopped a fire that was dangerously close to a home in a residential area.

Firefighters responded to a residential area on McIver Road just before 1:30 p.m.

Nearby residents posted on social media that their homes and yard were filled with smoke, while others said they could see pieces of ash flying in the air.

Resident Graham O’Leary tells Castanet how he ran over to help.

“It was (in the) hedges and it did start to catch the house and patio on fire,” said O’Leary.

Several people ran to the scene as well and used garden hoses to spray water on the flames.

“There was a lot of people helping out between spraying garden hoses and making sure everyone was out of the home,” he said.

Firefighters and police arrived on scene and finished dousing the flames.

“Very lucky it ended the way it did. Kudos to all who helped out,” said O’Leary. “Definitely saved the house from burning down completely."
