What's with that cloud?

A Castanet viewer submitted a photo of a cloud on Sunday in West Kelowna that was turning some heads. 

Environment Canada meteorologist Armel Castellan says the strange looking cloud was formed due to convection. 

''I tend to think that's a picture of a towering cumulus. The bottom part of it near the power lines could be rain or a shower cloud. It does look like a prototypical convective picture,'' he said. 

Towering cumulus are a form of cloud that can be based in the low or middle height ranges.

They achieve considerable vertical development in areas of deep, moist convection. They are an intermediate stage between cumulus mediocris and cumulonimbus clouds.
