DD service in fatal crash

UPDATE: 11:45 a.m.

Police have identified the deceased driver of a Hyundai Tucson involved in a fatal collision with a semi in West Kelowna overnight.

RCMP confirm the victim was the driver of the vehicle, which was operated by a local designated driver service.

Police continue their efforts to notify next of kin. They have not released the victim's name.

The passenger in the vehicle remains in hospital in critical condition.

UPDATE: 10:43 a.m.

While earlier reports indicated the SUV involved in Friday morning's fatal crash was a taxi, it appears the SUV was a designated driver service.

The white Hyundai Tucson involved in the crash had a "Gals Designated Driver" logo on the side of it. Police confirmed the driver of the SUV was killed in the crash, and the passenger was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

"If you have been drinking and do not feel that it is safe to drive, call Gals!" the company states on its website. "We will dispatch a team of two drivers to your pick-up point. The drivers will meet with you and drive you home in your own car while the second driver follows behind."

The company also offers a delivery service. It's unclear if the driver was taking a customer home at the time of the crash.

Castanet has reached out to the company.

Highway 97 was fully reopened at the crash scene as of about 8 a.m.

UPDATE: 7:40 a.m.

Highway 97 remains partially closed in West Kelowna this morning following a fatal collision overnight.

Police and coroners are investigating the crash between a semi and Hyundai Tucson, which happened just before 2 a.m. in the northbound lanes at the intersection of Bartley Road.

“Sadly, the driver of the white Hyundai Tucson was pronounced deceased at the scene,” says RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “His lone passenger suffered serious injuries and was rushed from the scene to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services.”

The driver of the semi is co-operating with the police investigation.

“One of our priorities at this time is establishing an identity for the deceased, and properly notifying his next of kin,” says O’Donaghey.
