Cutting hair, changing lives

Madison Erhardt

The Mount Boucherie Hair Academy is giving students practical experience cutting hair – and changing the lives of local homeless people.

The academy was designed for Grade 11 and 12 students who have chosen hairdressing as a career. It includes three courses, along with work experience and 870 industry training hours.

But perhaps the group's most influential training was cutting the hair of homeless clients at Inn From the Cold.

''Our first trip out was to the homeless shelter, where we went in and provided free haircuts for all the homeless at Inn From The Cold,'' says teacher Mandy Speirs.

''We also went to Kelowna Secondary School for the BC Cancer Foundation. Students shaved their hair for the cause.''

The students said they loved lending a hand to the less fortunate.

''It puts a positive impact into yourself, knowing you're doing something to help, even if it's small. It makes a huge difference to the people you are helping,'' said student Lena Luysenko.
