West Kelowna's civic Day of Mourning on Friday will honour a fallen firefighter.
Staff with the city and West Kelowna Fire Rescue will take part in a 10 a.m. ceremony at the flagpoles in front of Municipal Hall on Cameron Road.
A helicopter will fly at 10:15 a.m. to the top of Mount Boucherie, where a picnic table with a commemorative plaque in honour of Capt. Troy Russell will be installed at the peak.
The ceremony is open to the public.
This is the first Day of Mourning for the City of West Kelowna and West Kelowna Fire Rescue staff to commemorate the loss of one of their own.
Russell, a 20-year firefighter, died Sept. 25 last year after a heroic battle with cancer.
His is also the first line-of-duty death for West Kelowna Fire Rescue, as Russell's cancer was directly related to his work.
The event is taking place in advance of the National Day of Mourning on Sunday, which remembers those who lost their lives on the job and renews commitments to healthy and safe workplaces.
