Heater ignites roadside fire

A portable heater was responsible for starting a small brush fire along Highway 97 in West Kelowna Tuesday morning.

West Kelowna firefighters responded to the fire sometime after 5 a.m. between Boucherie and Westlake roads.

Several ambulances and RCMP also responded.

Cpl. Jesse O'Donaghey says the fire was sparked by a propane tank used to heat people who had been living  on the south side of the highway.

With the snowy and damp conditions, O'Donaghey says the fire was put out quickly.

There were no serious injuries, however one person was taken to hospital after being exposed to the ash and embers.
