Be aware in school zones

RCMP in West Kelowna are urging motorists to watch for pedestrians and obey school zone speed limits.

After a two-week holiday break, classes are again up and running in schools across the Okanagan.

"With the persistent winter conditions, extra caution will be needed to ensure the safety of young students and young crossing guards at busy school pedestrian crossings," says Const. Julie Miller.

"With the new year, police are increasing their efforts to ensure safer roadways throughout our community and around our schools.”

Motorists are reminded they could face a minimum fine of $196 and three penalty points if caught speeding in a school zone between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

You are also reminded it is mandatory to yield for school buses when their lights are flashing. The fine for not doing so is $368.
