Space found for homeless

The City of West Kelowna has found a new home to shelter the community's homeless during the cold winter months.

Up to 40 shelter spaces have been found at the Westbank United Church on Brown Road.

The shelter is being run in partnership with the city and the West Kelowna Shelter Society. The space is being funded by the provincial government.

The space was desperately needed after demand outgrew the previous shelter at Emmanuel Church.

According to the province, the shelter should be up and operational by Christmas.

It will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Guests will have access to laundry and shower facilities.

They will also be able to speak with representatives from health, and other social service agencies.

It's not clear if the shelter will operate after the winter season.

The new West Kelowna shelter will help relieve the pressure from four shelters running at, or near capacity in Kelowna.

A month ago, a portion of the United Church's basement was flooded following torrential rains.
