Murder trial a year away

A man accused of killing his wife and setting fire to their family home will wait another year to face trial.

Kevin Costin, 57, was arrested in May 2017, almost 19 months after the body of Hazel Budiongan was found inside their Boucherie Road home in West Kelowna.

The 37-year-old's body was found after firefighters doused a blaze at the house just before 2 a.m. on Nov. 4, 2015.

Costin is facing charges of second-degree murder, arson and causing indignity to human remains.

Following a preliminary inquiry last month, Costin's Supreme Court murder trial has been scheduled for next summer. The four-week jury trial will begin on July 22, 2019.

Costin has remained in custody since his arrest, and has not applied for bail.

Costin and Budiongan had married just months before her death. Budiongan was originally from the Philippines.
