Peachland ballot crowded

Here's a surprise — there's plenty of interest in the Peachland municipal election.

Just three days after nomination packages were available for pickup, they've been flying off the shelves.

Chief electoral officer Polly Palmer says eight packages have been picked up from the municipal office. Five of those are for council positions, three for mayor.

The final ballot in Peachland is expected to include several names following the raucous community debate over construction of a five-storey development on Beach Avenue.

Despite a large, organized opposition, council made changes to Official Community Plan and approved the development.

Peachland, like most municipalities in the Central Okanagan, does not make public the names of those people who pick up nomination packages.

Up the highway in West Kelowna, six nomination packages have been taken out, five for council and one for mayor.

There have been no school trustee packages picked up in either West Kelowna or Peachland.

Things have been extremely slow in Lake Country. Only Mayor James Baker has taken a nomination package.

Packages must be returned during the nomination period from Tuesday, Sept. 4 to the end of business Friday, Sept. 14.
