Driver caught flicking butt

A Central Okanagan woman is furious after witnessing someone flick a cigarette butt out their car window.

Laura Varney was driving towards Peachland on Highway 97 when she spotted the driver of a red car throw something out the window.

“I’m disgusted with people like this,” she said. “The plate was from Ontario.”

Varney says she's confident it was a cigarette thrown out about 11:15 a.m. on Sunday.

"It really looked like one. I did see it land," she said.

The incident follows the unveiling of a series of signs in West Kelowna urging motorists to stop the dangerous behaviour. Four of those signs will be along Highway 97.

Numerous fires in the Okanagan have been reportedly caused by tossed cigarettes.

The signs say violators could face fines of $1,075.
