Politics and Beach Ave.

Representatives of Friends of Beach Avenue are asking Peachlanders to ask tough questions of candidates in the run up to the Oct. 20 civic election.

The campaign is expected to be spirited with recent decisions by town council concerning a five-storey development on Beach Avenue at the forefront.

FOBA was formed by residents concerned about the development, which contravened Peachland's Official Community Plan at the time.

The OCP, which has now been changed, originally suggested building heights on Beach Avenue be restricted to three storeys.

"There's an election coming up, and of course, there's going to be candidates on both sides of the debate," says FOBA spokesman Lloyd Sotas.

"We are going to be, as individuals, I think very aware of the candidates and we are going to be asking them hard questions."

Sotas wouldn't go so far as to say FOBA will have an official slate of candidates under the society banner, but reiterated candidates on both sides will surface.

"Whether or not any of those will be members of FOBA is yet to be seen."

The society has withdrawn its court challenge against the five-storey development.

They had petitioned the BC Supreme Court to instruct council to obey its original OCP.

At the advice of council, the challenge was dropped once council brought in a new OCP.

"It essentially made our petition somewhat moot, except in the court of public opinion."

Sotas said not many people are happy with what went down.
