Truck stolen, arrest made

A man who was arrested in downtown West Kelowna Tuesday afternoon had stolen a pickup truck from a work site in Kelowna earlier in the day.

Police responded to the Lake Avenue area at about 3:20 p.m. after the owner of the black Ford F350 reported the theft.

The truck was seen driving west across the William R. Bennett Bridge.

West Kelowna RCMP found the truck driving erratically on Highway 97, but the man behind the wheel refused to stop.

“Members observed the truck at Old Okanagan Highway and Dobbin Road as it was stopped at a controlled intersection waiting to turn northbound,” Const. Lesley Smith said.

“Officers contained the vehicle and the driver of the stolen truck ran from the scene, but after a brief foot chase he was taken into police custody without incident.”

Jason Piro, 21, remains in custody and faces several charges, including possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and breaching a probation order.

He first appeared in court Wednesday, and is scheduled to appear again next week.
