Green leader in Okanagan

B.C. Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver will spend the next three days pressing the flesh and meeting with business and community leaders in the Central Okanagan.

Weaver will be in Kelowna and West Kelowna to stump for Robert Stupka, the Green candidate in the upcoming Kelowna-West byelection.

The riding was previously held by former premier Christy Clark, who resigned her seat soon after the Liberals were defeated by a confidence motion in the legislature.

The riding, which includes West Kelowna, Westbank First Nation, the Okanagan West Regional District and a portion of Kelowna, has been without an MLA since Aug. 4.

A date for a byelection has not been set. While the latest a byelection can be called is Feb. 3, Premier John Horgan has stated he will call the election early this month.

Voting will take place 28 days after the byeletion is called.

During his time in the Okanagan, Weaver will also co-host a town hall Thursday at the Westbank Community Hall, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Four names will be on the ballot, including Stupka, former MLA Ben Stewart (Liberal), Shelley Cook (NDP) and Kyle Geronazzo (Libertarian).

While Central Okanagan residents get ready to elect a new MLA, BC Liberals will soon elect a new leader.

The new leader will be elected following three days of online voting Feb. 1, 2 and 3.
