Details in junkyard fire

Alanna Kelly

Four vehicles that caught fire in Glenrosa on Monday belonged to one individual, police say.

Firefighters from West Kelowna and Peachland, along with a BC Wildfire Service crew, responded to the blaze on Gates Road at 12:18 p.m., which engulfed the vehicles and spread into surrounding brush.

Assistant fire chief Darren Lee said there were at least 10 cars on the lot the day of the fire.

“Police have since determined that the vehicles were each privately owned by the same individual and had been left on the vacant lot for some time prior to the incident,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

The fire grew in size to 30 by 30 metres before it could be extinguished.

Lee said the fire is believed to be human caused, as there was no lightning, and it is being investigated as suspicious.

RMCP said a clear cause of the blaze has not yet been determined. Fire investigators, RCMP and the fire department are continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.
