Flying gazebo cuts power

UPDATE: 2:50 p.m.

A BC Hydro crew is at the scene of a power outage in West Kelowna and Peachland.

Hydro says 1,568 customers have been affected by the outage that started around noon on Sunday due to an object on the wires.

Homes and businesses affected are north of Beach Avenue, east of Highway 97C and west of Gellatly Road.

The utility hopes to have power restored by 6 p.m.

ORIGINAL: 1:15 p.m.

Power is out between Peachland and West Kelowna.

A gazebo-type portable tent structure got picked up by high winds and blown into power lines near Elliott Road and Solar Road in West Kelowna.

Residents heard several explosions as the aluminum-framed structure hit the lines. It was left dangling from the lines, at least one of which was severed and hanging down.

Police and firefighters have closed the area. BC Hydro crews are on scene now.
