Big boost for pier plan

A newly proposed fishing pier in Peachland has received a large donation from the Freshwater Fisheries Society.

The 400-foot, wheelchair-accessible pier gives the opportunity for families and individuals to enjoy the water front.

Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. donated $25,000 to the project on Sunday.

“We’re extremely grateful to the Society for this significant gift, which will sponsor one of nine projecting bays that the pier will feature,” said Eldon Kerbes, President of the Peachland Pier Group.

The new pier will also have small plaques that honour families, loved ones and community leaders along it. Boaters will have easier access to dock and will provide an opportunity for everyone to fish.

“We’re supporting and installing fishing docks around the province, to improve access and reduce barriers to angling, to enable greater participation in the sport,” said Andrew Wilson, president Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C.

According to a release, 40 per cent of the funds needed to complete the project have been collected.

“When anglers purchase a freshwater fishing license, they help us invest in infrastructure projects such as this one,” Wilson said.

The completion date is still unknown but was projected to be finished in late fall of 2017.
