Rally For Rockets

  • Three goals in the third period propelled the Kelowna Rockets to a 4-3 win over the Portland Winter Hawks at Prospera Place Saturday night. They are now 19-7-7-0. The Rockets are on the road with the next game in Calgary on Tuesday.
  • Perhaps Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Bryan McCabe senses an end to the NHL lockout or just wasn't a big fan of European hockey. Whatever the case, the 29-year-old is heading home after exercising an escape clause in his contract with Swedish champion HV71 Jonkoping.Full story
  • Carl Pavano decided Saturday he wanted to pitch for the Yankees, and his agent and New York closed in on a four-year contract worth about $39 million US. Pavano called his agent, Scott Shapiro, on Saturday morning and informed him of his decision.Full story
  • Bruce Korte rode a couple of double takeouts to an 11-6 victory over world No. 1-ranked Kevin Martin in quarterfinal action at the Masters of Curling in Humboldt, Sask. Korte, who has twice represented Saskatchewan at the Brier, gained a berth in Sunday's semifinals (3 p.m. ET) against provincial rival Pat Simmons.Full story
  • World champion Jeremy Wotherspoon of Red Deer, Alta., took gold in the men's 500 metres Sunday, his second long track speed skating World Cup victory at that distance this season. Wotherspoon 54th career World Cup win came in 35.38 seconds, ahead of the 35.56 posted by Kip Carpenter of the U.S., and the 35.67 by Joji Kato of Japan. The 28-year-old leads the 500 World Cup standings with 350 points after four of 10 races.
