Newcomers Zellweger, Hofer help out in 6-3 Blazers win over 'Tips

Blazers take down Silvertips

Olen Zellweger and Ryan Hofer both scored goals against their former team Friday as the Kamloops Blazers quelled an Everett Silvertips comeback en route to a 6-3 win.

Matthew Seminoff, Zellweger, Hofer, Ashton Ferster, Daylan Kuefler and Logan Stankoven were the goal scorers for the Blazers. Jackson Berezowski (2) and Austin Roest scored for the Silvertips.

Berezowski opened the scoring for Everett two minutes into the first period, but the Blazers answered back quickly, scoring four consecutive first-period goals to lead 4-1 after 20 minutes. The Silvertips scored twice in the second to get climb within a goal, but Kuefler and Stankoven tallied late in the third to make it a 6-3 final.

Dylan Ernst made 25 saves on 28 shots to earn his WHL-leading 22nd win of the season in net. Tyler Palmer stopped 37 of 42 Kamloops shots in a losing effort.

Zellweger and Hofer were traded to the Blazers on Sunday in a blockbuster deal with Everett. Former Blazer Kaden Hammell, who went the other way in the trade, finished the night with one shot on goal.

Kamloops product Aidan Sutter, who patrols the blue line for the Silvertips, had two assists.

The Blazers were scoreless on one power-play opportunity. The ’Tips scored once on two chances.

Announced attendance at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, Wash., was 5,778.

With the win, the Blazers improve to 24-8-4-2 on the season, still tops in the B.C. Division and second in the Western Conference. With the loss, the SIlvertips move to 19-19-1-0.

The Blazers are back in action on Saturday, returning to Sandman Centre to take on the Spokane Chiefs (7-27-1-2). Puck drop is 7 p.m.
