Kelowna Rockets get a player and two picks in a deal with the Brandon Wheat Kings

The Western Hockey League trade deadline has come and gone with no significant activity near the 2 p.m. Pacific time cutoff.

The Kelowna Rockets made a pair of moves prior to the deadline, sending forward Nolan Flamand to Brandon in exchange for forward Trae Johnson and a pair of prospects draft choices, and acquiring the playing rights to 16-year-old defenceman Landon Cowper from Prince Albert for a conditional draft pick in 2025.

The biggest deal prior to the deadline saw Brandon send forward Jake Chaisson to Saskatoon for a first and two second round draft choices.

Much of the heavy lifting by teams was done prior to the today.

As expected, the Regina Pats did not deal presumptive first overall NHL selection Connor Bedard at the deadline.


UPDATE 12:10 p.m.

The Rockets made a minor move during the lunch hour, acquiring the rights to 16-year-old defenceman Landon Cowper from the Prince Albert Raiders for a conditional fifth round prospect pick in 2025.

Cowper, a fourth round selection of the Raiders in 2021 has been playing with the RINK Hockey Academy's U18 team in Kelowna.

In 18 games, he has a goal and 15 assists.

The Western Hockey League trade deadline is 2 p.m. this afternoon.


ORIGINAL 10 a.m.

The Kelowna Rockets have completed a two-player swap with the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Just hours before the 2 p.m. trade deadline, the Rockets sent 18-year-old forward Nolan Flamand to the Wheat Kings in exchange for 17-year-old forward Trae Johnson and a pair of picks in the WHL prospects draft.

Along with Johnson, the Rockets get a third round pick in the 2023 WHL draft and a fifth round selection in 2024.

"In Johnson, we acquire a young, skilled forward," said Rockets president and GM Bruce Hamilton.

"We want to thank Nolan for his time as a Rocket. He's been a loyal and dedicated member of our organization."

In 37 games with the Wheat Kings, Johnson has tallied two goals and four assists. He has five goals and eight assists in 100 games with the Wheat Kings spanning two seasons.

Flamand has appeared in 35 games for the Rockets this season, putting up four goals and 12 assists.

Both players were taken in the second round of the WHL draft.
