Kamloops Blazer Logan Stankoven could be the Rookie of the Year

Stankoven gets nominated

A Kamloops Blazer is up for this year's WHL Rookie of the Year award.

Forward Logan Stankoven, along with forward Dylan Guenther of the Edmonton Oil Kings, are the 2019-20 nominees, the Western Hockey League announced today (April 16). Stankoven is the nominee for the Western Conference and Guenther is the nominee for the Eastern Conference.

It should come as no surprise why Stankoven earned the nomination for the Jim Piggott Memorial Trophy.

Chosen fifth overall at the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, the 17-year-old was the leading member on the Kamloops squad during the 2019-20 regular season. In 59 games, he posted 48 points (29G-19A), including seven power-play goals and five game-winning goals to tie for third on the team in goals and rank sixth in team scoring, notes a news release from the Blazers.

"Among WHL rookies, Stankoven was tied for first in goals and ranked sixth in overall scoring. Stankoven also led all Western Conference rookies in goals. His five game-winning goals were tied for second among WHL rookies," states the release.

For his WHL career, Stankoven  has recorded 49 points (29G-20A) in 66 WHL regular season games. He’s also appeared in six WHL playoff games, recording two points (1G-1A).

The last time a Kamloops Blazer won the Jim Piggot Memorial Trophy was during the 2000-01 season, when Scottie Upshall took home the prize.
