Winterhawks completed weekend sweep of the Rockets, 4-1 Saturday

Portland leaves with sweep

The Kelowna Rockets were better up and down the lineup Saturday, but it still wasn't good enough against the powerhouse Portland Winterhawks.

The top ranked team in the Western Hockey League backed up Friday's 7-3 victory with a 4-2 win Saturday.

The Rockets were led by Kyle Topping, who's beginning to round into form after missing three months of the season recovering from surgery on a broken foot.

He scored both goals for the Rockets. Roman Basran, who was pulled after allowing three goals on four shots Friday, went the distance Saturday, giving up just three on the night.

Seth Jarvis, who's fourth in league scoring and a possible second round NHL pick in June, again led the way for the Winterhawks offensively with a pair of goals, including what turned out to be the game winner.

After a scoreless first, Cross Hanas and Jarvis got the Winterhawks going with goals before the six-minute mark of the second.

Topping pulled the Rockets to within a goal, but Jarvis erased that with a goal a little more than a minute later.

Portland iced it with an empty net goal before Topping scored in the final minute to close out the scoring.

The Rockets, who have lost five in a row and 11 of 13, continue their five-game homestand Wednesday when Tri-City pay their final visit to Prospera Place.

The Rockets will be looking to complete the series sweep of the Americans.

Kelowna will enter that game clinging to the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference. They're four back of Vancouver and just  three up on the eighth place Seattle Thunderbirds.
