Nolan Foote scored twice as the Rockets edged PG Saturday

Foote launches bears, win

Nolan Foote scored twice Saturday - the opening and closing goals.

Both were vital in the Kelowna Rockets 3-2 victory over the Prince George Cougars on Teddy Bear Toss night at Prospera Place.

Foote, stationed at the left point, took a pass from Kaeden Korczak, walked in and sent a slap shot that beat Taylor Gauthier high to the stick side.

The goal, on a Rockets power play, opened the scoring, and launched a few thousand stuffed animals onto the ice.

The stuffies will be delivered Sunday morning to Kelowna General Hospital where they will be distributed to patients in the children's pediatric ward and to the elderly in the rehabilitation ward.

Sean Comrie doubled the lead 62 seconds into the second, finishing off a pretty three-way passing play with Mark Liwiski and Michael Farren.

The Cougars tied it before the end of the second, but it was Foote again, on another power play, who decided the outcome.

His one-timer from the top of the right circle on a perfect feed from Korczak cleanly beat Gauthier for the game winner.

Newly acquired Jaden Joseph also assisted on both power play markers.

Roman Basran turned away 19 shots to earn the victory.

It was the last game at home for the Rockets before the embark on their six-game Eastern Division road trip.

The trip begins Friday in Prince Albert.

Prior to Saturday's game, the Western Hockey League honoured Kelowna native Steve Papp with a special Milestone Award.

Papp has spent 16 seasons officiating in the WHL, the last 14 as a referee.

Over the years, Papp has worked 10 WHL Conference Championships and six WHL Championship series. In 2017 and 2018, Papp was part of the officiating crews for the Memorial Cup in Windsor and Regina, respectively.

Papp also officiated the IIHF World U18 Championship in 2013 and the IIHF World Junior Championship in 2014.
