Giants take down Rockets

The Vancouver Giants showed why they are one of the top teams in Canadian Junior Hockey.

The Giants were the superior team at both ends of the ice Wednesday, as they stymied the Kelowna Rockets at every turn in a 2-1 victory at Prospera Place.

Only the play of goaltender Roman Basran kept the score respectable, and gave the team a chance to earn a single point.

"He's been a rock," said defenceman Dalton Gally of Basran.

"Even our backup, Porter in Everett, same thing. We are more than p;leased with our goaltenders, it's just up to us to bury a couple and hopefully get them a win."

The Giants defence smothered the Rockets attack much of the night, not giving up much in the way of quality shots.

Head coach Adam Foote acknowledged it was a good team they faced at the other end of the ice, but said his club never gave up, and gave themselves a chance at the end.

"We were right there again...we fought hard...we hung in there, and there was a chance for us to get a point or get a win," said Foote.

Dylan Plouffe opened the scoring on the power play when his one-timer from just inside the blueline blew past Basran's outstretched glove.

Nolan Foote tied it with a shorthanded effort, his 16th of the season on an odd-man rush.

Leading a two-on-one, Leif Mattson dropped the puck to Foote who was trailing the play. His wrist shot beat Trent Miner to the far side.

It stayed that way until midway through the second. Milos Roman stole the puck from Kaeden Korczak in the right faceoff circle. He drifted toward the front of the net and beat Basran to the short side.

The goaltenders shut the door the rest of the way.

The Rockets have suffered back-to-back 2-1 defeats to the top two teams in the west in Everett and Vancouver.

Gally says they can definitely learn something from both of those teams.

"I think we should learn from our opponents, I really do.

"Once they get the lead they play solid defence. It would be nice if we put the first goal in next time and play defence for us."

Wednesday's loss snapped the Rockets five-game home ice winning streak, and prevented them from climbing over Victoria into second place in the BC Division.

Kelowna hits the road for a game Friday in Tri City before returning to host Saskatoon Saturday.
