Extra Road Enforcement

There will be extra enforcement on the roads this Easter long weekend to try and prevent accidents that are unfortunately part of holidays.
Police say the Coquihalla is traditionally very busy and figures from 2004 indicate last Easter Long Weekend the toll booths reported 34,000 vehicles passing through to various destinations in the interior.

In 2003, more than 1,300 people were injured and 8 people died in crashes over the Easter long weekend period for British Columbia.

The top five most frequently reported contributing factors for personal injury collisions are driving without due care, failing to yield to the right of way, unsafe speed, alcohol and weather conditions.
Add driving on the wrong side of the road for contributing factors in fatal collisions.

Police offer some safety tips. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Long weekend traffic and weather conditions may mean that you need to slow down and keep the proper following distance from other road users.

If this weekend is your first road trip of the year, check the condition of your vehicle and make sure that it is ready for a longer drive.

Even in spring, you may encounter winter road conditions in some parts of the province. Check weather and road reports before you leave home, and be prepared for all types of driving conditions.

Make sure all occupants in your vehicle are wearing seat belts.
