Animal Auxiliary Thrift Store launches fundraiser to help dog shot between Cherryville and Lumby

An emergency fundraiser has been launched to help a North Okanagan family whose young dog was shot.

Marie, a large mixed-breed dog, was shot Thursday night between Cherryville and Lumby.

Gena Barzan, who operates the Animal Auxiliary Thrift Store in Vernon, is organizing the fundraiser.

Barzan says it's not known who shot the dog or why, but police have been notified.

It looks like the 14-month-old dog was shot with a .22 calibre round.

“The family has no money,” Barzan says. “We have the dog on transport to Central (Animal Hospital) here in Vernon, where they are going triage and assess to see if they will do surgery here or send her off to Kelowna.”

Barzan doesn't know yet exactly how much is needed for the surgery, but she does know it won't be cheap.

“The triage alone is between $300 and $400, so it will be quite a bit more,” Barzan said Friday.
