"What a surprise!"

Vernon's good citizen of the year says her selection for the honour is the biggest surprise of her life.

Helen Sidney is beloved by many as the "little old lady" who walks the length of Bella Vista Road every day, picking up garbage. She has a wave and a smile for all who pass by.

"Thank you so much ... this overwhelming. I can't believe it," the diminutive centenarian said upon being presented with a plaque, flowers, and balloons.

A humble Sidney, who just turned 100 years old says she hopes she can continue her "work" for another 10 years.

She said she wishes all those who wave and honk as they pass "a good day."

Sidney was surprised with the award as her daughter Marge brought her to City Hall on the pretense of meeting some friends for some good news.

The award was presented by JCI Vernon, and good citizen co-chair Abby Lagerquist said the group was overwhelmed to receive more than 160 nominations for Sidney.

That's the most ever received for a single nominee.

Mayor Victor Cumming said people like Sidney are what makes a community rich.

Sidney previously made headlines when she donated $100,000 to Armstrong Elementary School's library in 2021, having taught there for 41 years.

She is also a recipient of the queen's platinum jubilee pin and medallion, and governor general's Caring Canadian Award.

Helen has walked her rounds on Bella Vista for 38 years and says she feels "very humble" to receive the award.

"I love meeting people ... I'm a positive person," she says.
