Removal of danger trees in wake of snow dump closes parts of SilverStar Mountain Resort

Danger tree removal at Star

The mid-month dump of wet, heavy snow continues to cause problems at SilverStar Mountain Resort.

In an operational update Wednesday, the resort says backside terrain and all upper Nordic trails are closed today, for danger tree mitigation.

On. Jan 16, the resort said the 25-centimetre snowfall brought down "hundreds of trees," creating "challenging conditions."

Mild temperatures and heavy snow load "caused hundreds of trees to snap or fall over completely... This has created numerous unmarked hazards throughout our 3,282 acres of skiable terrain," the resort said at the time.

SilverStar anticipates reopening the backside and upper Nordic trails on Thursday.

"Keep your heads up. Conditions are changing by the minute and new hazards can appear each time you get off the chair. Busted-off tree tops are raining down and sticking in the ground like missiles," Isaac Rain posted in the Silver Star Community Page on Tuesday.
