More than 500 seniors receive provincial shelter aid in Vernon

500+ seniors on subsidy

More than 500 Vernon seniors receive provincial shelter aid.

Following up on a request from council in light of the ongoing tight rental market and housing affordability crisis, city administration returned with a figure of 561 seniors in Vernon accessing SAFER rental subsidies.

SAFER stands for the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters program.

It provides monthly payments to subsidize rents for eligible residents aged 60 or over.

The number was the latest figure as of December.

The benefit is calculated based on a formula that looks at household income, household size (single vs couple) and location in the province.

The maximum subsidy in Vernon is $495 for singles and $555 for couples.

The last increase to the rent ceilings used for the SAFER formula was in September 2018.

However, BC Housing is reviewing both the SAFER and Rental Assistance Program for low-income working families. The review is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks, a report to council states.

The BC Housing website includes an online calculator to estimate what applicants may be able to receive through the SAFER program.
