Fire at Vernon Canadian Tire intentionally set, police believe

Fire deliberately set

Vernon RCMP believe the fire at the Village Green Shopping Centre Canadian Tire over the weekend was deliberately set.

Police are investigating the suspicious fire, which broke out about 3 a.m. and burned up the outside of the building in the area of the garden centre.

Fire crews were successful in confining and extinguishing the fire, but it caused serious damage to the commercial building.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, and at this point, we have reason to believe it was deliberately set," says Vernon RCMP spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski.

"We are in the process of collecting video surveillance from other businesses in the area and are also asking the public for their assistance," says Terleski.

Investigators would like to speak to anyone travelling through the area between 2 and 3:30 a.m. on Saturday who may have useful dashcam footage, or anyone who was near the scene at the time of the fire.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Vernon RCMP at 250-545-7171 and quote file 2022-20689.

Information can also be provided anonymously via CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.nokscrimestoppers.com.

The store remains closed until further notice.
