Man hanging off back of transport truck takes tumble on Highway 97 in Vernon

A daredevil hitchhiker took a spill on Highway 97 in a video shared on social media Monday.

It's unclear when the video was shot, but it shows a man in black with what appears to be a backpack on his back, hanging off the back of a large commercial transport truck as it goes past the Department of National Defence grounds on Highway 97.

The speed limit in that area is 50 km/h, and the truck appears to be going at least that fast in the video when the man steps down from the back of the vehicle and "bumper surfs" along the busy highway for several seconds before losing his balance.

Images captured from a following vehicle and posted to the Vernon Rant and Rave (uncensored) Facebook page by Nathan McAllister show the man tumble to the ground as a woman in the following vehicle gasps.

The man did not appear to be seriously hurt, as he sits up on the southbound shoulder as traffic goes by.

Still, the potential for serious injury – or worse – was great, as that stretch of highway is arguably one of the busiest in the city.
