Okanagan's endless summer continues into October with record temperatures

Temperature records broken

The Okanagan's endless summer continues as unusually warm weather is lingering into October.

Both Vernon and Kelowna broke temperature records on Sunday, with Vernon hitting 25.3 C and Kelowna reaching 25.9 C.

That's almost a full degree warming than Vernon's previous record of 24.4 C set in 1904, and 0.3 of a degree warmer than Kelowna's previous record 25.6 C, which was set in 1932.

Records in both cities have been kept since 1900 and 1899, respectively.

Environment Canada says the ridge of high pressure over the province brought record heat to communities across B.C.

Locations that set a new daily maximum temperature for Oct. 2 included:

  • Abbotsford 27.5
  • Agassiz 27.4
  • Cache Creek 28.6
  • Clearwater 26.1
  • Clinton 25.0
  • Comox 22.7
  • Courtenay 22.7
  • Esquimalt 25.3
  • Gibsons 23.7
  • Lytton 28.1
  • Malahat 24.8
  • Nakusp 21.4
  • Pitt Meadows 27.5
  • Port Alberni 29.3
  • Sechelt 23.7
  • Squamish 27.0
  • Tatlayoko Lake 26.6
  • Victoria Harbour 25.3

Temperatures in the Okanagan are expected to remain in the mid 20s for the next seven to 10 days.

That's six to eight degrees higher than normal for this time of year.
