Vernon incumbent 'disappointed' by campaign sign vandalism

Campaign sign vandalized

Victor Cumming says he's "very disappointed" after a large campaign sign of the incumbent Vernon mayor was vandalized.

A re-election sign on Okanagan Landing Road in support of the first-term mayor was discovered with spray painting across it Monday morning.

Cumming says campaign volunteers were "on it first thing this morning, and luckily they were able to clean it up."

Cumming says such vandalism is disappointing, "no matter whose sign it is."

The sign is located across from Ellison Elementary School, on one of Vernon's busiest thoroughfares.

Cumming says his campaign is "going well," and he's "energized and ready to go."

He says campaign signs are a critical part of the democratic process.

"They are absolutely critical to open democracy," he said. "They give the public a quick look to see who's running."

Cumming, a regional economist and rural development specialist, was elected in 2018.
