Made-in-Vernon movie, Young Ronin, will premier at the Towne Theatre next month

A made-in-Vernon movie will soon premier at the Towne Theatre.

Young Ronin was the brainchild of Peter Kaz, David Scarlatescu and Mitchell Vanlerberg.

The story revolves around orphan martial artists, Nate and Tobey, who are in a race against time to secure enough funds for their ill friend Maya, who is in desperate need of an operation.

A mysterious stranger offers them a job to go undercover at a local high school to kidnap a teenage celebrity sensation, Lucy Hampton, and hold her for ransom.

Desperate and out of options, the boys accept the job. As Nate grows closer to Lucy, he begins to doubt if their reasons can justify their actions.

Scarlatescu plays the role of Tobey, Vanlerberg takes on the role of Nate while Kaz is Richard, the mystery man behind the kidnap plot.

Taylor Fraser plays Lucy along with Veronica Gonsalves as Maya, Erik Cherkoff as Liam and Morgan Applegath as Donny.

In Hollywood, it costs millions of dollars and a team of thousands of people to create an action film.

Vanlerberg, Scarlatescu and Kaz challenge that approach by creating an independent action film using only the resources the Okanagan has to offer. Including teaming up with Kees Tae Kwon Do to choreograph all of the action set pieces in the film.

They used their knowledge of filmmaking to bring to life a full-feature action film, shot in Vernon with local actors.

The movie will premier Oct. 14 and tickets are available through the Towne Theatre.
