230 calls for service for North Okanagan RCMP over the weekend

Busy weekend for police

RCMP were kept hopping in the North Okanagan over the weekend with 230 calls for service between 4 p.m. Friday and midnight Sunday.

"Our officers responded to traffic complaints, property related offences, (a) missing person, instances involving interpersonal violence, and a number of other calls for service and self-generated investigations," says spokesperson Const. Chris Terleski.

Police arrested a man stealing from vehicles in Coldstream early Saturday.

About 1 a.m., police received a report of a report of a man who was rummaging through vehicles on Middleton Close in Coldstream. Officers located and arrested the man as he was leaving the area with a number of items reported stolen in his possession.

Matthew Howard, 42, of Vernon, has been charged with one count each of theft, possession of stolen property, failing to comply with a probation order and trespassing at night on a residential property.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday, police were called to a parking lot on the 2900 block of 29th Avenue for a report of an assault.

Officers located the victim lying on the ground. While they were providing aid to the man, two men from the crowd approached and became confrontational. After being warned not to interfere, both men were arrested for obstruction.

One of the individuals, a 34-year-old Vernon man, also faces a potential charge for assaulting a police officer.

On Sunday night, a man was arrested for impaired driving following a two-vehicle crash on 32nd Street.

A Dodge Caravan was struck from behind by a Jeep Cherokee on the 4000 block of 32nd Street.

While conducting their investigation, officers noted signs of intoxication on the man who was allegedly operating the Jeep. The 26-year-old Vernon man was released from custody pending a future court date.

Also on Sunday, a wanted man was brought into custody after using another person's name to try to avoid arrest.

Officers from the Downtown Enforcement Unit were patrolling Polson Park when they encountered a man believed to have a warrant for his arrest. The suspect gave a fake name in an attempt to evade capture, however, his identity was confirmed and he was arrested.
