Society launches My Playlist to kickstart Vernon community radio station

You say it, they'll play it

You can live out your inner DJ dreams with a new fundraiser in support of community radio in Vernon.

The Vernon Community Radio Society has launched its 'My Playlist' promotion in support of 97.9 Valley FM, which hopes to go on the air this summer.

Supporters can submit a three, five, or 10-song playlist for a donation to the non-profit station.

"When Valley FM begins its streaming service, you will hear your songs featured in the show My Playlist, scheduled for Sundays at 10 a.m. and Saturdays at 1 p.m.," society president Gordon Leighton says in a press release.

You can submit three songs for a donation of $25, five songs for $35, and 10 songs for $50.

Each week, one listener's name will be drawn for a $50 gift card for Match Eatery and Public House.

"Your song playlist can be dedicated to anyone you choose, or not! It's up to you. Remain anonymous if you wish. We'll let you know when your playlist is scheduled," says Leighton.

The first weekly draw will be on Saturday, July 16.

Songs must be five minutes or less and not include lyrics that some listeners may find offensive.

You can submit your playlist by emailing [email protected].

The Vernon Community Radio Society is a not-for-profit organization and will offer programming that is different from that of commercial broadcasters and the CBC.

Profits will be used to support local programming, local talent and worthy community projects.

The station will have a "smaller footprint" at 1,000 watts of power than Vernon's two commercial stations, CJIB and CICF, which both broadcast with 100,000 watts.

The station has its CRTC operating licence and is currently fundraising to begin streaming, followed by a campaign to build studios and over-the-air transmission facilities.

Membership in the Vernon Community Radio Society is $35 per year.
