Vernon School District and Okanagan Indian Band local education agreement in effect through July 2025

SD22, OKIB sign agreement

A Local Education Agreement has been signed between School District 22 and the Okanagan Indian Band.

In her year-end report, Supt. Christine Perkins said the “newly signed” agreement will be in effect July 1, 2022, through, July 2025.

“Thank you to Chief and Council, and to Gareth Jones, Kevin Smeltzer and Lacey Gregoire. Your support, guidance, and collaboration are greatly appreciated. We also thank the North Okanagan Friendship Centre and Vernon & District Metis Association for collaborating with SD 22, and OKIB, on our updated Enhancement Agreement to be presented this Fall,” Perkins said in her report.

An SD22 report dated Jan. 1, stated the Vernon School Board and OKIB “agree to work collaboratively to improve upon the quality and equity for all students.

“OKIB students will receive timely and effective academic support that will allow them to succeed within the provincial school system.

“All students will receive ongoing education in the language and culture of local Syilx people.”
