Vintage reel takes a look inside 1981 elementary school class somewhere in Vernon

Kindergarten in 1981

Vintage video sleuth Francois Arseneault has another mystery on his hands.

The Vernon videographer and historian has dug up a vintage Super8 reel showing a kindergarten or Grade 1 class from 1981.

The Vernon school is unknown, but "perhaps a few faces may be recognized," says Arseneault.

Classrooms in the early '80s were quite different from today's.

"No computers or technology, good old-fashioned chalkboards still used," Arseneault notes.

"Today, everyone has a smartphone capable of taking crisp and sharp 4K video. In 1981, a film camera in a classroom would have been novel."

Perhaps the novelty of the moment may stick in a former student's memory and shed a little light on the back story.

"I hope this puts a smile on someone’s face," he says.

"The wonderful kids just starting out life in the film are now in their mid-40s."

Arseneault is always looking for more information on the vintage footage he digs up, and he encourages people to add their input in the comments section on his Youtube page.

He has an extensive collection of vintage footage, and is always looking for more.

He currently has more than 1,000 episodes from 54 countries dating back to 1917.

Anyone who may have old 16 mm or 8 mm film footage is invited to email Arseneault at [email protected].
