Vernon's Roster Sports Club Bar & Grill hosts Vernon Optometry 20/20 Squash Open this weekend

Squash tourney is back

The Vernon Optometry 20/20 Squash Open is back.

After two years of cancellations due to COVID-19, the event will be in full swing through the weekend with players from around the province converging on the Roster Sports Club Bar & Grill for the tournament.

“This tournament has been over two years in the making. The original April 2020 date was only a few weeks after the initial COVID restriction came into effect, and then the following year, additional restrictions just prior kiboshed plans again. We are all really excited about competing and hosting a great event,” said Peter Trafford, the club’s squash pro and tournament organizer.

More than 50 players will be competing for more than $3,800 in prizes, including an open draw where four of the top 20 squash players in the province will be competing.

The finals are set for Sunday at 2 p.m.

The event will also feature a silent auction with some prizes donated by local business and 100 per cent of the auction proceeds will support the The Kalamalka Rotary Club’s Starfish Pack Program.

“We have gone through a number of planning sessions over the past two years, only to be disappointed, so we are all certainly happy to see it finally happening this weekend,” tournament sponsor Dr. Tanner Udenberg, co-owner of Vernon Optometry, said.

“It’s going to be a great weekend with some very exciting matches to watch.”

Spectators are welcome to check out the action.
